Super Bowl LVII in Phoenix

state farm stadium

Although the NFL was established in 1920, it was not until 45 years later that the first Super Bowl took place. The NFL denied the request of several businessmen to have their own football franchises in 1960. The NFL refused to grant their request and they created the American Football League (AFL) as an alternative league. There was much rivalry and competition between the NFL and AFL for many years. In 1966, the owners agreed to merge the two leagues by 1970.

The merger resulted in the Super Bowl, it didn’t originally have this name. The original name of the game was “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”, which sounded very dull. Even though the merger didn’t take place until 1970, the first Super Bowl was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967. It would be easy to believe that the first Super Bowl would have sold out instantly, but it wasn’t. The game was broadcast by a few television networks. It ended with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers beating the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.

FESTIVITIES

The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee selected Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix to host the fan celebrations throughout the Super Bowl LVII. The festival, which is accessible to the public, will offer a riveting fan experience that includes live concerts and fun and multicultural celebrations.

“Downtown Phoenix is a different place than it was before the big game. We are looking forward to seeing visitors experience the growth in business, restaurants, and arts as well as entertainment and transportation improvements,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

Margaret T. Hance Park, a unique park accessible to all Phoenix residents, is one-of-a-kind. The 32-acre park was revitalized and renovated in multiple phases by a public-private partnership. It features a climbing wall, separate net climbing structures, and a water mist play feature. There’s also a sand play area under a shade canopy. The park also features three unique animal-themed play structures: a Kit Fox, a Black-Tailed Jackrabbit, and a Great-Horned Owl.
